Character Info [wip]
tl;dr: The agent of a faerie who idealises technology and progress, trying to keep his head in the real world while being aware that he's inevitably going to fall into the fae realm, and finding it hard to keep that balance...
Personal background: (big WIP)
* Japanese-Canadian guy, 5th-generation(?) but has family across the Pacific, grew up in small-town BC. Quiet life as a kid, though spent time living abroad which left him a little bit of an outsider from his friend group when he got back. Lost a parent around the same time.
* Generally unsure of himself in high school, not doing well. Around the age of 15 he met the individual who would become his initial faerie patron, at first acting as a supportive figure during these hard times. He had someone who liked him! Somewhere he could belong!
* Found out about the worst or more unsettling aspects of his patron's ideal and domain earlier than he was 'ready' for, a year or so later, somewhat by accident; unfortunately, that accident occurred in the depths of said faerie domain. He couldn't backtrack to the exit he knew of, but made it to a transitional zone with another faerie's space, being spotted quickly as he attempted to get through.
* His acts caught the attention of the new domain's owner, who ... could have been taken to be impressed by his attempting to throw off the influence of a competing ideal, but who quite knows with fae? Regardless, it made him an offer. Protection from his old patron's grasp. Freedom for years to come, to live his life how he wanted. All he'd have to do was agree to do the odd errand, act as a pair of eyes in the mundane world to spot things it might have missed.
...Oh, and sign over his name.
* Not really thinking through or understanding the full consequences, in a rush to get back to the mundane world, he agreed. Things seemed normal for a little... until the scale of what he'd signed up for started to become clear. Starting with glowing eyes in the mirror.
* It took him some time before he managed to find other people to rely on and confide in; friends on the outside of the same nonsense, if not directly involved to the same degree. Since then, they've helped keep his feet on the ground. ... Somewhat.
* With his head together more, he'd come to realise that he could keep an eye on more than just what his patron'd asked, turning his new powers towards tracking down other cases of supernatural or faerie involvement and potentially helping those in trouble. Not always an easy task, though.
* He moved to Vancouver after leaving school, partly following his friends' choices and careers, and partly because of the resources the city provided for his ... unusual activities.Don't ask how he pays the rent in an expensive city. He's not bothered with college as such, because with a clock ticking over his head, it seems like a waste of valuable time...
Personality:
* Protective streak: Doesn't want other people to go through what he's gone through. Doesn't trust easily but will absolutely do everything he can for his people once he *does* trust them.
* Not sure where he fits in: On a few different levels. Fae world vs. human world, stuck on the edge. Can't be fully human any longer; not sure what the fae world holds for him. He's reluctant to really claim to be any one thing or a member of any one group.
* Running out of time: Makes impulsive decisions. Little bit of a thrill seeker, doesn't like sitting around and wasting opportunities. Can rush things a little, needs friends to get him to chill out. Always had a bit of this streak, but it's gotten worse...
* Stubborn, unless it actively looks to be hurting other people, in which case see the first bullet point. That said, will absolutely take responsibility for his screwups. ... Occasionally gets into spirals of attempting to fix his mistakes but just botches something else.
* Nicknames the hell out of anyone he likes. It's not a lack of respect, but a habit from dealing with fae and their ... subjects.
Abilities:
* 'Fae technomancy'. Focused on the ability to intercept and manipulate data streams and file contents, and perceive transmissions and digital signals as if they were real things, even heavily encrypted ones.
Note, he's not a classical 'hacker'. His mundane computer skills are average; he keeps relying on his powers to make computers do things and worrying later if he should be doing so... He's tried to teach himself programming out of a feeling of obligation, but didn't really get past Hello World with anything.
* Enhanced senses. Has a system of 'magi-tech' sensors largely located around his eyes and hands - his magic works through technology, and allows his embedded tech to function. He can't easily draw a line around what is magic or tech.
* Physical/defensive abilities: Can cloak himself from view, 'jamming the signal', or make his presence or voice more noticeable; can stun or disorient individuals via 'sensory overload' or flooding their senses with static.
* Resistant to 'true name' based magic, see further notes.
Other stuff:
* The name issue:
His birth certificate says 'Seiji Ryan Kirishima', as do his bills/driver's licence/general legal documents. Those are all perfectly legitimate.
On a metaphysical level, though, things get weird. Effectively, his patron has shared ownership over that name and identity, but allows Sage to continue using them in his day to day life. This is part of the reason he prefers going by a nickname! For faerie and magic purposes, his true name is 'Array-of-Myriad-Visions' (... at least, that's a shortened and human pronounceable version.)
* Glamour, appearance and such:
Most folks will just see a slightly punky guy, often with a denim or leather jacket with some badges or patches over a hoodie. His hair's around shoulder length out of sheer 'why bother getting it cut too much' and wariness over having a barber notice his fae features, unlikely as that is.
His magic-tech attributes are only visible to someone who has already been affected by fae magic or knows what they should be looking for. Typically, this amounts to glowing eyes (and more of those than there should be) and 'Tron line' marks.
Cameras and the like don't tend to focus on him properly as a side effect of this 'glamour effect' - while images don't show any fae traits unless he wants them to, the camera doesn't know what it should be focusing on, so to speak!
